Body Contouring by

VASERlipo

Why VASER lipo vs. other liposuction procedures?

VASER lipo, an ultrasonic liposuction method, has been growing in popularity for more than a decade because patients experience a shorter recovery time than with other fat removal surgery such as traditional liposuction. As well as removing fat from the body Vaser lipo sculpts the body too and there is also reduced downtime.

It can be used on multiple areas of the body and the technology is less damaging to muscle tissue and connective tissue so visible results are seen more quickly. There is also less scarring and bruising than with traditional liposuction methods.

Where can I have VASER liposuction?

The procedure is typically used for areas that are likely to store fat such as the tummy (abdomen), love handles (flanks), back, thighs, arms and chin, but can be used on a number of different areas without issue. It is also popularly used for men to treat gynaecomastia (man boobs). We can deal with multiple areas in a single visit – this can be discussed with your surgeon during your consultation.

____

Does it hurt?

VASER Lipo Body Contouring procedures are minimally-invasive, and performed under local anaesthetic. Compared to traditional liposuction, the pain is greatly reduced. Discomfort is kept to a minimum and is a large factor in the popularity of the procedure. Most discomfort is reported around the treatment areas for the initial 1-3 days, after which you may feel a dull background ache around the treatment sites for anywhere between 1-4 weeks – remember everyone’s body heals differently.

To help with any discomfort, you are prescribed a course of painkillers as part of the recovery process. In line with what you will be told before the procedure, after the procedure you will be fitted with compression garments and an aftercare schedule necessary to aid the swift recovery.

Will I have any swelling, bruising or numbness? If so, for how long?

Each person’s body may respond differently, but from our experience it is not uncommon to experience some slight swelling and probably bruising within the first few days post treatment.

Swelling and bruising can be frustrating for many patients, keen to feel the effects of the procedure in full, and we understand that. We advise people to understand and share their stories with other people but bear in mind it is very much an individual response.

VASERlipo Post-Operative Care

  • Ensuring smooth retraction of skin

After removing subcutaneous fat, the skin will retract. To achieve the best aesthetic result, it is essential that the skin retraction process be monitored and controlled.  If care is not taken, the skin can retract unevenly, producing wrinkles, dimples, or folds. Gravity pulls the skin downward, sleeping positions can deform the skin's surface, and clothing can unevenly compress the skin's surface.  To combat these effects, all the patients at our clinic are provided with a compression garment specifically designed to optimise the outcome of their procedures.

Compression garments are typically worn day and night the first week after a Vaser lipo procedure. The garment can then be removed during the day, and worn only during sleep the second week. The effects of the garment are inspected at each of the post-operative care visits, and adjustments are made if necessary.

  • Accelerating the speed of recovery, as well as the reduction of swelling and bruising

Any surgical procedure will traumatise the skin layer, and this will result in swelling and bruising. This is part of the natural healing process of the body, but can be unsightly and uncomfortable. The time needed for swelling and bruising to subside varies per patient (for more info, see our study onVaser liposuction swelling, bruising, and numbness), however, the healing process can be accelerated by good post-operative care.

For each of your post-operative visits to our clinic, we provide a variety of treatments to help accelerate the reduction of swelling and bruising.

  • Removal of fluids and seromas

A Vaser liposuction procedure includes the irrigation of the sub-dermal layer with a saline solution that helps remove the fat cells.  Some of this fluid will remain in the body after the procedure, and although this will eventually be eliminated by the lymphatic system, in some cases, the doctor will install drains to allow the fluids to evacuate more quickly.  The drains are typically removed on the first or second post- operative care visit.

Sometimes Vaser lipo procedures give rise to a build up of fluid pockets.  These are called seromas, and your post-operative care will examine you and remove them if they occur.

  • Monitoring of infection

In contrast with liposuction procedures performed in high-volume hospitals accepting patients with a wide variety of illnesses, we perform all liposuction procedures in our own operating theatre.  As we only perform cosmetic procedures, this significantly reduces infection rates in comparison to hospitals.  However, as patients return home after surgery, the chance of a post- operative infection, although low, is not zero.  The ones that do occur are normally superficial skin infections.  Thus, each of your post-operative visits to our clinic will include an inspection for infection, and anti- biotic care as needed.
